FAIRY MEADOWS

A JOURNEY OF HEAVEN

Unquestionably! Fairy Meadows, the most splendid place ranks as one of the topmost destination in Pakistan.

Every inch of this land is carpeted with lush vegetation grass, always offers a paradisiacal view of ninth-biggest mountain of the world, Nanga Parbat(also known as Killer Mountain), which is second highest in Pakistan after K2, to it’s visitors, and located in the Diamer(Diamir), a region of Gilgit-Baltistan Pakistan. There is no denying that fairy meadows holds a special place in the heart of North Pakistan. At an altitude of 3,300 meters(about 10,800 feet) above sea level, the wide grassy meadow spreads out beneath the magnificent mountains, a serene paradise for those who seeking a tranquility in nature’s embrace. The place was named as ”Fairy Meadows” in 1953 by Australian adventure lover Hermann Bhul as he was first one to experience the summit of mountain. Fairy meadows is also called ”Heaven on Earth” due to its picturesque beauty. Locally, it is known as Joot or Jaught, the place were also given the name as ”Marchenwiese” which literally means ”Fairy Tale meadows” by German mountaineers who were really astonished by its enchanting landscape.

Fairy Meadows is approachable by thirteen-fifteen-kilo meter long jeepable trek starting from Raikot Bridge( located 80 km south to Gilgit) on Karakoram Highway to the village known as Tato or Tattu. This is a small village having a crystal clear water stream. This bridge is the only route to Fairy Meadows. The jeep rid takes us through one of the bumpiest road we ever experience in Pakistan. In the year 2013, the World Health Organization(WHO) placed it in the list of the world’s deadliest road on the planet as second most dangerous on account of it’s totally unpaved as well as unmaintained roads. That’s why getting to Fairy Meadows is a huge life risk and prevents many from enjoying the view. This perilous and narrow gravel road is open for inhabitants as they have to provide transportation and convenience to tourists. The jeepable track starts from Raikot bridge to village Tato or Tattu. And from Tato onward, it takes approximately three to four hours to view this idyllic destination, covering a distance of five-kilometer. The grassland located in the Raikot bridge is surrounded by thick alpine forest.

In the year 1995, the government of Pakistan has declared it as a National Park.

Many of staying possibilities are available for visitors in the Fairy Meadows including night camping or camp sites and traditionally constructed wooden cottages. The camping with all the necessary amenities is available. A peaceful and tranquil stay for a few days can be life time experience.

Fairy meadows is surrounded by dense alpine forest, and towering mountains which enhances its attraction. The Pine forests in this region are most probably some of the last remaining virgin forests in northern, undisturbed by any human activity and remaining in a natural state. Notable peaks can easily be seen from Fairy Meadows like Nanga Parbat as well as Raikot glacier. The Raikot glacier, facing the north of the Nanga Parbat is known as Raikot face.
